If you’ve been trying to land a job, and nothing seems like it’s working, consider a few tips below:
• You need a new bag of tricks. If you’re out there in the job market now – or are afraid you might be – then you can’t rely on the old tricks that you’ve used in the past to get your foot in the door. Once upon a time, submitting a great resume may have yielded a few phone calls or actually landed you an interview or two. Now, it’s a different game out there and you need a few new tricks up your sleeve to get noticed – or even to get a response to your emails.
• Whatever you’ve been doing, do more. Whatever you’ve been doing to land a job – whether it’s sending out your resume to appropriate job openings, networking up a storm – multiply your efforts by ten, even if you think you can’t possibly do more than you are already doing. (We all think this, by the way.) Here’s reality: You can, and you need to if you want to make headway.
• Keep your focus laser sharp. Yes, more effort is required to land a job, but keep your efforts on target. Don’t let desperation lead you to start applying to anything with a heartbeat – resolve to only focus on landing jobs that you genuinely want. Sending out your resume to tons of jobs in an attempt to “cast a wide net” usually backfires because you’re simply not going to be competitive for those positions that deviate too far from your core areas of expertise.
