Want A Career Change But Do Not Know Where To Begin?

You’ve been doing the same job for way too long and you want out? You know you want work that is fun, creative and meaningful. But you also need a paycheck. How and where do you start? There is so much information you may feel overwhelmed when it’s time to decide. Here are simple but effective methods to help you decide on the career path you should take.

Here’s the wrong way: Pick your new career based on a fad/trend or the prediction of sustained growth and success. You could Google “hottest jobs” or “best new careers” but if none of these careers suit who you are or what you want in life, this could be a disaster.

Here’s the right way: Follow your passions and your interests. Here are 5 methods to get you started.

1. Describe a job you hate. This approach from Barbara Sher has you describe the “job from hell”. In this approach you describe what you’ll be doing, where you’ll be doing it and with whom. Knowing what you don’t want is as important as knowing what you do want. It’s the best place to start when completely undecided. Once you know what you don’t want, you’re more likely to see what you do want.
2. Pick any career. Is there a career you may have been interested in as a child? As an adult? Any career that fascinates you should be researched. Technology has facilitated the growth of many careers that did not exist back when you went to college. Your dream career may be a lucrative market today. There’s only one way to find out-Research.
3. Listen to your life. If your life, relationships and health are in shambles, choose a career path that allows you to easily maintain balance. Identify a career path that allows for flexibility, promotes your values and you still find enjoyable. Remember there are several ways to make money without a job-job (legally of course).
4. Volunteer. This is an excellent way to test the waters without investing too much. Choose an organization that you may be familiar with, a cause you’re passionate about and volunteer. Not only are you exposed to a variety of different jobs but you’re also exposed to the people who do the hiring. Harvey Mackay lists this strategy as one of his top 10 ways to find a job.
5. Create your own job. Are you a creative, natural leader who either recognizes or thinks up good ideas? Being self-employed may be the best option for you on deciding to change careers. You only have to determine which idea is the most lucrative and then start.
